The Queen's speech

from: The Guardian.co.uk

A colourful ceremony took place yesterday in London: The Queen attends the parliament in its Official State Opening and addresses a speech that shows the legislative plans of the government for next year.

Click if you want to watch the speech.
Here you have the transcription of the speech, that has been writtern by the government, of course.
This speech is followed by a debate, if the government shouldn't command a majority, it should resign, because it would be defeated in the debate.

Before the Opening, the Yeomen of the Guard search the cellars of the Parliament, that is what they are doing in the above picture, follow the link to the Telegraph if you want to learn about that tradition.
This tradition comes from 1605 when the Gunpowder Plot took place.
